We're creating a new oak woodland at Westmoorgate, near Trewint, Cornwall, using acorns we gathered in semi-natural ancient woods in Cornwall and Devon, along with other native species such as hazel, alder and beech - also grown from local seed.
Germinated and ready to plant..
We will be planting around 500 more trees this winter (2024/5), with help from some fellow tree lovers we've met nearby - as well as ongoing support from our friends and colleagues at Cornwall Music Service Trust.
Already our woods are creating habitats for a wider diversity of temperate rainforest treasures such as this beautiful lichen
We've been sad to see the felling of many mature hedgerow trees in this area of late and are determined to stage a nature fight-back! We're lucky to have been given the support of some far-sighted patrons, who have provided the land and allowed our project to be born.
The woodland's name comes from our passion for music - and our plans to host musical workshops and performances at this beautiful location.
We are currently running a project bringing groups of local youngsters to the Symphony Woods to immerse and compose music - more on this soon!
We're also teaming up with a lot of enthusiastic young naturalists from Cornish schools on the tree planting front.
We're looking forward to hosting visits from other school groups over this coming winter and will be hosting several tree planting days.
What could be more inspiring than creating a wood that could last a thousand years?
This tree was one of a batch grown from seed and kindly brought to the site by our friends at Forest for Launceston. These hardy visitors from nearby Coads Green took a few minutes out from their music project to help us get them in the ground.
